PSHE during lockdown- a new lockdown means more teaching from home. We understand this can be difficult so we have collected 5 tips to help teach PSHE online.

Know your app software
Technical Issues – we’ve all been there!
With these tips you can prepare for even the worst case scenario
- Be Prepared! You probably know where most things are on the app software you are using but its always good to do a refresher.
- Check that your external links work when sharing a screen. This is common problem that can occur. Make time to practise sharing your screen and clicking external links.
- Make sure no social media or miscellaneous websites/apps are visible when presenting to your class.
- Think about the set up for your class. Do you need to be standing up so there is a white board in view that you can easily access, or do you prefer sitting down at a desk (make sure this is a quiet environment with low disturbances)?
Remember teaching online is not that scary!
This is still a classroom.
- If you’re not using your surroundings, such as a white board, set up a personal background – this could be of the school, a classroom or you could personalise it to the PSHE lesson.
- Relate to current situations if necessary.
- Set rules within the chat box (if provided) with consequences if pupils mistreat it.
- Set up quizzes like Kahoot at the end of the lesson to see how much students have learned.
Consider Your Topics
Safe topic checklist
There is a lot you can do remotely to deliver some aspects of PSHE education, but not all PSHE education topics are appropriate for remote teaching or home learning. We would therefore strongly advise you to carefully consider whether a topic is safe to be addressed remotely or through home learning before setting any work in the subject.
- Might the topic be difficult for some pupils to discuss or learn about in the home environment?
- Will this encourage or make it more likely that a pupil will go onto inappropriate or potentially harmful websites as a result of this lesson/activity?
- Might any content cause distress or anxiety to pupils?
- Might any content traumatise a pupil with personal experience of the topic?
- Does the lesson/activity provide sufficient signposting to trustworthy sources of support available to pupils should they wish to discuss the topic further, make a disclosure, or get advice and help?
Are you topics doable online? Ask yourself the questions about how you did the curriculum before and if it is suitable.
- Am I sure the topic is safe to address through home-learning?
- How practical/realistic are the activities?
- Do any activities (e.g. group work) need to be completed in a different way?
- Could your pupils manage this work by themselves or in discussion with a parent?
- Could the instructions on the lesson plan be simplified for ease of use?
- Might any part of the lesson upset or worry pupils if they are working on it at home? If so,
remove or adapt this section
Focus on achievable/ realistic and positive strategies that pupils can adopt at home.
Pupils can experience home learning with an excellent opportunity to embed PSHE education within their routines
with these great examples:
- Healthy Lifestyle
- Getting involved in cooking and making meals at home. Learning and discussing the importance of a balanced diet, with the right food choices.
- Create an exercise class quick little routines, for example: jumping jacks; jogging on the spot; half burpees. Discuss how this makes pupils feel and why it is important.
- Hygiene is a key subject to discuss with your class at the moment. Ask students what guidelines they have been following during Coronavirus and how important it is to wash your hands etc.
Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing
- Yoga or mediation lesson online. Concentrating on techniques to relax the mind and how this can help promote positive mental health.
- Complete a weekly journal reflecting on feelings and emotions.
- Discuss daily goals and achievements. This could be school or home related i.e. chores, walking, homework.
- Check in with friends and family – how can we do this but also stay safe?
- Discuss the importance of being kind to one another during this time.
- Allocate pen buddies so classmates can write to each other throughout lockdown.
- Discuss how Coronavirus has had an impact on seeing more vulnerable family members. What can we do to keep in contact and why is it so important?
- Digital Literacy
- Analysing the accuracy of sources of information-after watching/reading media coverage. Recognise when to limit the access to news/media coverage if it becomes to worrying and causes feelings of anxiety.
- The safe use of tools to use to communicate with each other on and offline i.e. personal information, private social media accounts, safety online, being respectful of others and cyber bullying.
